I love to crochet. I love to crochet things for other people. Unfortunately, I cannot always give everything away for free. When I made these unicorn cowls for Christmas gifts, I was asked to make a cheaper version as the thick yarn can get expensive causing these cowls to be pricey.

I pulled out my cheapo yarn and smaller hook and whipped up a cheaper cowl! Today, I give you this cute pattern for free. This pattern has not been tested, so if you find a mistake, please let me know!! Happy crocheting friends!

Dino/Unicorn Cowl

Materials: 6.5mm hook, worsted weight yarn in colors needed (green for body of dino, brown or darker green for the spikes. White/cream for body of unicorn. Any 3 colors for the Mane/horn)

Cowl: child (teen/adult) (green or white/cream yarn)

Row 1: Ch 90(120). [1 sc, 1 dc] in 2nd ch from hook, sk st, *[1 sc, 1 dc] in next st, sk st, repeat from * across, end with 1 sc in last stitch. Turn 89(119)

Row 2-15(17): Ch 1, [1 sc, 1 dc] in first st, sk st, *[1 sc, 1 dc] in next st, sk st, repeat from * across, end with 1 sc in last st. Turn 89(119)

Fasten off after last row.

Hood: child (teen/adult)

Row 1: Skip 20(28) sts. Join to the 21st(29th) st with a sl st, [1 sc, 1 dc] in same st, sk st. *[1 sc, 1 dc] in next st, sk st, Repeat from * across 23(30) more times, end with 1 sc after sk st leaving remaining 20(28) sts unworked. Turn. 49(63)

Row 2-20(24): Ch 1, [1 sc, 1 dc] in first st, sk st, *[1 sc, 1 dc] in next st, sk st. repeat from * across. End with 1 sc in last st. Turn. 49(63)

Fasten off after last row leaving a long tail for sewing.

Using long tail, fold hood in half and sew the top closed. Flip hood inside out so the seam is on the inside. Weave in ends.

Join yarn to the bottom edge of cowl (RS facing. I have done it with RS facing and WS facing. I personally like it better with RS facing). Sc around the entire hood/cowl adding 2 sc in the corners. Sl st to the starting sc to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Attach Small buttons to the hood so it makes a V in the front or sew closed instead of using buttons.

Although you can’t see the buttons in the picture, I circled where the buttons should be sewn on the bottom part of the cowl. If you need a different picture, please let me know.

Dino spikes (I use 7-8 per hood)

Materials: 6.5 mm crochet hook, worsted weight yarn in brown/ dark green

Note: I work mine in a continuous spiral, but if you would rather join at the end of each round, that works too.

Round 1: Using Magic Circle, Ch 1, 9 sc in magic circle.

Round 2: (1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) 3 times (12)

Round 3: 1 sc in each sc (12)

Round 4: (1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) 3 times (15)

Round 5: 1 sc in each sc (15)

Round 6: (1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st) 3 times (18)

Round 7: 1 sc in each sc (18)

Round 8: (1 Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times (21)

Round 9: 1 sc in each sc (21)

Round 10: (1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times (24)

Round 11: 1 sc in each sc (24)

Slip st join and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Fill each spike with a bit of Poly-Fil and Sew spikes along the top and back of the hood.

Unicorn Horn

Materials: 6.5 mm crochet hook, Worsted weight yarn in the color you want for the horn.

Round 1: Using magic circle, Ch1, 8 sc in magic circle, sl st to join. (8)

Round 2: Working in a spiral, use a stitch marker to mark 1st st of each round here and throughout. Sc in ever st. (8)

Round 3: Working in BLO (back loops only), (1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (10)

Round 4: Working in BLO, 1 sc in each st around (10)

Round 5: Working in BLO, (1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (12)

Round 6: Working in BLO, 1 sc in each st around (12)

Round 7: Working in BLO, (1 sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (14)

Round 8: Working in BLO, 1 sc in each st around (14)

Round 9: Working in BLO, (1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (16)

Round 10: Working in BLO, 1 Sc in each st around (16)

Round 11: Working in BLO, (1 sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (18)

Round 12: Working in BLO, 1 sc in each st around (18)

Round 13: Working in BLO, (1 sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (20)

Round 14: Working in BLO, 1 sc in each st around (20)

Round 15: Working in BLO, (1 sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (22)

Round 16-18: Working in BLO, 1 sc in each st around (22)

Join to next st with a sl st. Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing horn onto the hood.

Stuff horn with Poly-Fil and sew horn approximately 3 inches from the center of the hood.

Ears: make 2 double strand (pattern adjusted for single strand too)

Materials: 6.5mm crochet hook, double strand of white/cream worsted weight yarn.

Row 1: Ch 3, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and next ch, turn (2)

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st across, turn (4)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (4)

Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in last st, turn (6)

Row 5: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn (6)

Row 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in the last st, turn (8)

Row 7: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn (8)

Row 8: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in last st, turn (10)

Row 9: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. (10) At the end of row 9, continue to sc around the entire ear adding 2 sc in corners. Sl st to 1st st of row 9. Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

(this ends the double strand yarn instructions)

For the single strand instructions for the ear, do not sc around the ear at the end of row 9. Rows 1-9 are the same as with the double strand.

Row 10: Ch 1, 2sc in first st, 1 sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in last st, turn (12)

Row 11-13: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. At the end of row 12, continue to sc around entire ear adding 2 sc in corners. Sl St to the beginning st of row 13 and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Pinch bottom of ear together and sew directly beside the horn. Sew through front and around to the back of the ear.

(this picture is on a cape and not a cowl, but the ears and the horn were sewn on the same way they would be with the cowl.)

Mane: font bang cut 6 inch pieces in your colors. The rest of the mane is 10 inch pieces. Knot 3 pieces together by folding yarn in half, slipping crochet hook through yarn and pulling small loop through the front. Put the now 6 ends through the small loop and pull to make a knot. Make mane as full as you want to, the fuller the better.

I had a friend request that I try to write some applique patterns. I decided to give it a try and share my first one with you all today. My patterns are not tested. If you find something wrong please point it out to me and feel free to share pictures of your completed projects.

Explanation of Stitches:

CH: chain

SC: single crochet

DC: double crochet

ST: stitch

SL ST: slip stitch

SC2TOG: single crochet 2 together

Note: the BODY is created by double crocheting in between the stitches from the previous row instead of the top loop as you would normally crochet.

Unless stated, the chain 2 at the end or beginning of the rows does not count in the stitch count.

Materials used:

4mm crochet hook

worsted weight yarn (I just used scraps that I had on hand) in brown, a lighter color for the hooves, nose, and antlers and black yarn for the nostrils and eyes (can also use sew on black eyes)

BODY: 4mm crochet hook and brown yarn

Chain 11

Row 1: DC in the 3rd chain from hood and all the way across, (9) CH 2, turn.

Rows 2-5: DC all the way across. Remember to go in between the DCs from the previous row, (9) CH 2, turn.

Row 6: Ch 2, DC 5 times in the first st, Dc in the next 7 stitches, DC 5 times in the last st, CH 2 and SL ST into the last st.

Fasten off.

HEAD: 4mm crochet hook and brown yarn

Row 1: Using the magic circle, CH 2, DC 6 times into the magic circle, SL ST to beginning to join (6)

Row 2: CH 2, DC twice in the first stitch and in each stitch around the circle. DC twice in the SL ST or there is too big a gap in the head, SL ST to join (14) (in the picture, I put my crochet hook through the stitch I am talking about.)

Row 3: CH 2, DC twice in each st around (28)

Fasten off.

NOSE AREA: 4mm crochet hook and lighter color yarn

Row 1: Using the magic circle, CH 2, DC 6 times into the magic circle, SL ST to beginning to join (6)

Row 2: CH 2, DC twice in the first stitch and in each stitch around the circle. DC twice in the SL ST or there is too big a gap in the head, SL ST to join (14)

Fasten off. Using 2 pieces of scrap yarn, make 2 nostrils.

EARS: Make 2 of each color. 4 mm crochet hook

Brown:

CH 5

Row 1: SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and across (4), CH 1, turn.

Row 2: SC2TOG twice (2), CH 1, turn.

Row 3: SC2TOG (1)

Fasten off.

Lighter color:

CH 3

Row 1: SC 2nd chain from the hook and across (2), CH 1, turn.

Row 2: SC2TOG (1)

Fasten off.

ANTLERS: 4mm crochet hook, lighter color yarn (each antler is made differently)

Antler #1

CH 21

SL ST down the antler starting with the 2nd CH from the hook (20) DO NOT TURN

You will be continuing to SL STS down the other side.

SL ST 8 Stitches, CH 5, Sc back down beginning with the 2nd chain from the hook (4), SL ST to reconnect to the original chain.

SL ST 3 stitches, CH 7, SC back down beginning with the 3nd chain from the hook (6), SL ST to reconnect to the original chain.

SL ST 4 stitches to finish the original chain.

Fasten off.

Antler #2

CH 21

SL ST 5 stitches, CH 7, Sc back down beginning with the 2nd chain from the hook (6), SL ST to reconnect to the original chain.

SL ST 4 stitches, CH 5, SC back down beginning with the 2nd chain from the hook (4), SL ST to reconnect to the original chain.

SL ST to the end of the original chain. Put 2 extra SL ST in the last ST and SL ST down the other side of the original chain.

SMALL HOOVES: 4mm crochet hook, lighter color yarn, make 2

Using the magic circle, CH 2, DC 6 times in the circle, SL ST to join.

Fasten off.

BIG HOOVES: 4mm crochet hook, lighter color yarn, make 2

Using the magic circle, CH 2, DC 10 times in the circle, SL ST to join.

Fasten off.

Arrange all your pieces.

Start sewing the pieces together. When sewing the antlers on, either use some brown yarn or sew the antlers on to the piece you are making and then sew the rest of the Moose on. Everything else should sew together with their extra yarn from fastening off. After attaching the mouth, Attach the eyes.

This pattern can be made smaller with smaller yarn and a smaller hook. Hope you enjoy and please message me with any questions and also with any mistakes you may find.

Happy crocheting, friends.

It's 11:30 pm on a Thursday night. I just got home from my tour of UPS where I will be rejoining the working world again. I'm tired and grumpy and just want to go to sleep. I'm anxious about juggling a new job, homeschooling my 4 amazing boys, taking care of my wonderful husband, and keeping up with my home.

As much as I want to go to sleep, I think I need to stay up. My work schedule next week is 10:30 pm-2:30 am. If I go to bed now, how am I going to make it through the next week. I absolutely love sleep. It is my 6th love after God, my husband, and my boys. I admit, I could probably sleep half the day away and not feel guilty. These past 2 nights, sleep has alluded me.

I have been completely overwhelmed as of late. For the past 10 years, I have been a stay at home mom, and I had not planned to get a job this soon. Things have happened this past year that made it a necessity for me to work. Thankfully, God provided me with a job that works with my husband's schedule. I have been anxious and terrified. I do not do well with change. I feel like I am going to fail at my new job. I feel like I have failed as a wife and a mother. I have been so wrapped up in what I have been feeling, God and His Word have taken a back burner.

I haven't even thought about giving God all my worries. I allowed those worries to take over my mind and my actions. These past few days have started out like normal. I got up, made my coffee, did school with my kiddos, and took my crochet projects to my room to work on them and stew about my situation. Tonight though, I realized that I need to leave it in God's hands. I need to let God have control of my life. The Bible has so many verses about anxiety and fear, but instead of going to His Word, I allowed my anxiety and fear to take over. Tonight, I claim some of these Verses and commit to start and end my days the same way-with yarn, coffee, and a whole lotta Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7, Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 41:10, Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Psalm 56:3, What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

1 Peter 5:7, Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
